The traditional service feels very rigid. I feel the spirit of God, but I really think it's mostly because of my husband. I think that if someone were to connect with God in a way that didn't fit their norm, that would probably not be welcomed. The contemporary service has a much greater sense of freedom, and we have really tried to emphasize that it's a "come as you are" place, and everyone is free to approach God and respond in whatever way they feel led. Before we started a second service, I felt a spirit of discord. Some people wanted the freedom to respond as they felt led, and that made some other people very uncomfortable. Since we went to a two-service format, I think it's healthier overall.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344296417215561454.post-67760869488083640492014-05-16T18:41:10.802-05:002014-05-16T18:41:10.802-05:00I especially like your tip #8 about being there wh... I especially like your tip #8 about being there when the movers do their work. I would imagine that movers are there to work & pack, if there's any special requests like, pack that first, or last, being there could help out a lot. It's a small town that's in decline and has seen a lot of local businesses closing in recent years. The town itself has a spirit of hopelessness, and most of the younger generation doesn't come back after college. The church has tried a lot of things in the past, but they were perceived as not working. Our church is seen as stuffy and hoity-toity, which is a barrier for some in the community. One person who pastored here 30-some years ago only wanted a select few people as leaders and basically encouraged everyone else to sit on the sidelines, and that attitude kind of stuck. Our immediate predecessor was here for 8 years and devoted an extraordinary amount of time to pastoral care, which was probably necessary at first because the two pastors before her had both died mid-appointment, but eventually it just enabled the spectator mentality.

Anyway, all that to say, there are a lot of thought patterns here that need to change, image issues, and more. We're not expecting to see changes overnight.Melissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15405449792316902895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344296417215561454.post-58198011363275077782014-01-08T08:00:34.327-06:002014-01-08T08:00:34.327-06:00Yes, a spiritual issue. I am also a clergy spouse, fighting the good fight to help my husband see that killing himself for the parish is not a good choice, either for God or for his family. I have become much more assertive over the past few years with church leadership, wardens and council members, to let them know when enough is enough. We were in a parish that nearly ran him into the grave. I have already buried one husband (liver cancer) and do not believe that God is calling me to do this again. You both need to let the leadership of your parish know that the time for an associate is NOW not after he is put in the ground.Nancy Trottierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10857097158387505716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344296417215561454.post-9457986641698806272013-12-16T11:12:32.145-06:002013-12-16T11:12:32.145-06:00Thank you! I was told to leave and escorted out. Hubby witnessed only part of it, but had to go on with the funeral/graveside. I have never forgotten it and never will. Because of that incident, I believe that's why I have panic attacks and anxiety over a 'pew'.

sharon :)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13591534344748262621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344296417215561454.post-75429997832234558782013-09-23T07:38:06.128-05:002013-09-23T07:38:06.128-05:00Thanks Jacquie. I have been checking back for a reply and was still wondering about it today. So, I did a Google search to find more information. I thought I'd share the following from the conference website, in case any one else was curious too. It looks interesting.

"Bishop Mike Coyner and Dr. Doug Anderson will lead the "Making a Good Move" seminar for all clergy moving to new appointments this year. The seminar is scheduled to begin Friday May 17 at 2 p.m. (ET), running into the evening for clergy and their spouses, if available. Spouses may arrive at 3 p.m. (ET). Dinner will be included on Friday evening.

The seminar will continue on Saturday May 18 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (ET) for clergy and representatives from the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee of the new appointment church. Lunch is not included on Saturday. The seminar will be held at Plainfield UMC; 600 Simmons Street Plainfield IN, just west of the Indianapolis International Airport.

The purpose of this seminar is to help clergy, spouses and the PPRC begin their new appointments and get off to a good start. Topics of the seminar include:

Leaving Well "Saying Good-Bye"
Your First Impressions
Your Leadership Choice
Your Leadership Results
Your Teamwork with Pastor-Staff Parish Relations Committee
Your First Sunday
Your First Week
Your First Few Months
Your First Conflict
Your Spiritual Survival Kit

There is no charge for this seminar."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344296417215561454.post-72589874945785998772013-06-18T09:11:48.700-05:002013-06-18T09:11:48.700-05:00Helpful info.
